junk

i have this on my iPhone. liked it so much i decided to buy it for my mac mini (OSX10.7.5). It never loaded properly, even after several attempts to contact the customer service. they only promised updates that never happened. even offered some other "crap" software that i do not need, or want. finally, today ! an update. STILL DOES NOT WORK. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

Great Game!

Great game! No issues with installation nor any other issues with playing the game. Works great! Wish you could disable animations all together as sometimes it does make the game move along a little longer than it should; however it’s super fun.

Disappointed, I bought this for online multi-play, which is only iPad for now

Disappointed, I bought this for online multi-play, which is only iPad for now. iPad ver 4.0 (which added my long-awaited online multi-play so I could play with friends). OSX ver 1.3, no online. I didn’t notice the differences until now. I finally figured out how to start an online multi-player on the iPad, then went to this on my MacBook Air, and nada. I hope this gets added soon. Please add this. Thank you.

Needs Online

After purchasing the app for My Iphone, and I loved it. Thought what the hell the online was great and the game was fast and very good looking. Was incredibly dissapoionted to spend 4x the amount and get no online and slower loading. They need to add online for the OSX!

Crashes a lot.

Great game. Just like the board game. In fact, I bought this at the same time as I bought the board game so I could play it when there were no friends around. The problem is that the game crashes a lot. I’m playing through the introductory Campaign and it crashes several times in each scenario, except maybe the first one. If they fixed this crash problem, I would give the game more stars. I’m using an iMAC 2.8GHz Intel Core 5 with 4GB RAM and OS X version 10.9.4.

Buggy

Catan is a great board game and it’s a shame that this computer version is so buggy and has poor attantion to detail. I feel like the folks who made the game never played either the board game nor the game they wrote. Right out of the gate it doesn’t save any of your settings. EVERY time you start a new game you have to reset the users, resize windows, etc. Consequently statistics are out of whack unless you rename yourself exactly the same way every time. The game freezes randomly requiring a close and reopen. I’ve had numerous game where the end of game stats summaries were completely wrong (claiming I hadn’t been robbed at all, yet I was robbed many many times, for example). In general the whole thing implements modern GUI standards very badly. The rules of game play seem to flow correctly and the dice rolling is largely the proper curve over time.

Buggy software

I do enjoy the game but it often crashes on Mavericks. After spending around an hour of play the game just exits. I also think the computer cheats! : )

I’ve always liked Catan

I’ve played the table top version for years. I have one main complaint about this app, however. It takes far too long to load. Even after I’ve closed all other apps, and defragged the hard drive, and cleared out the cache, it still takes more than five minutes to load. Why is that? And will the deverlopers fix it?

Fun, But Crashes

I love the Xbox 360 version of this game (which is now retired), so I figured I’d pick it up for iOS and OSX. It’s a lot of fun and the graphics are good for what they are, but it does freeze and crash. About 40 minutes into level 5 of the campaign, I was a couple points from victory when it just froze and crashed. Pretty disappointing that I’ll have to start that level over from scratch after I was doing so well. As others have mentioned, it is lacking multiplayer capability, so your only option is single player mode. If it were $9.99, it’d be a great deal, but for $17 I’m second-guessing my purchase with the crashes and lack of multiplayer.

Fun when it works

Been trying to play for the past few days since purchasing and it crashes a good 85% of the time its in use. Saving helps you start back up where you left off but having paid $17 with the expectation that it would be stable enough to use with normal gameplay is leaving me extremely disappointed.

I love the board game, this is a poor substitute

First off, the game board is angled so seeing all the tiles can be a challenge. The tiles further away are very small. Second, I don’t find it much of a challenge when the computer characters are placing on an 11 and the 11 rolls more than the 6 that I’m on. Statistically that doesn’t make sense. It is still an ok substitute but the Ipad and Iphone versions are a little better than the Mac version. It needs some serious TLC.

Game works okay, other stuff doesn’t.

I’ve been playing Catan for a long time, both the board game and the computer game. This version plays pretty well, although I’d like to see it expanded to have up to 6 players like the board game. One problem that I see is that the Editor doesn’t work. Click the button and nothing happens. Click it a bunch of times and still nothing happens. Another problem is that you can go to the Catan web site from the game and view maps that were created by other people and apparently you’re supposed to be able to actually play them…except when you click on a map to play it, nothing happens. Again, just like with the editor, you can click a map a bunch of times to no avail. It would be nice to get these capabilities enabled in the game to make it even more intersting. Lastly, while a computerized random number generator isn’t truly random, it’s quite a coincidence that once I start winning with a gap of 4 or more points, the dice just seem to roll the 7 extremely often…except when it’s my turn. So I basically get stuck for awhile while the other players try to catch up. I’d like to see the players make better decisions when it’s their turn rather than fixing the dice to stall my progress. I still like the game, but this one needs more work to raise the bar and enjoyment level.

Absolutley unplayable

Crashes constantly. And not just this version. Other OS versions do exactly the same thing. Would be a great game if they would get their stuff together and fix it.

Unpolished but Fully Functional

I was nervous about buying Catan, with all the negative reviews, but Im glad that I did. Here are my impressions: Catan is an implementation of the classic board game. It supports games with 3-4 players, who can be humans (hotseat only; there is no online play) or computer-controlled AIs (there are 10 different options, allegedly with different playstyles). 20-odd "scenarios", with different layouts and rulesets, are available. There is also an Editor, with the ability to construct new layouts (apparently limited to the basic rules of Settlers, SF, and/or C&K only--no access to the special rules from the built-in scenarios) or download others layouts from online. Criticisms: The graphics are not as clear as they could be; the experience is slightly evocative of playing the board game on an overly-large table while nearsighted. Playing in System 10.10.1, I also experienced occasional minor bugs and glitches, mostly cosmetic; only once (in over twenty games) did a glitch mess up gameplay. There is also one consistent bug: the Editor fails to launch when needed for downloading/creating new layouts (as a workaround, I was able to launch it manually after opening the Catan package contents in Finder).

Unplayable Graphics - Absolute Garbage

As other reviewers have noted, the game board is angled, which makes it very difficult to see some of the tiles. It’s also just a pain. The graphics are muddled and have serious contrast issues, which makes it difficult to see pieces on the game board and keep track of moves. User interface controls are strangely complicated. I like that you can customize boards, but despite loving this feature, there’s little you can do with this game. It’s just impossible to play with these awful graphics and crazy controls. This version costs actual money, and it’s the worst electronic Catan I’ve ever seen. The iPad version is the best. I like that version a lot, actually. I wish they’d make that even more customizable (option to remove the Robber, and option to make your own boards), add some even tougher bots, and expand it to the Mac. This version should be in the trash.

Good game, Mediocre app

The game of course is great. The app crashes in the middle of the game often. I cant publish after creating my own map in Editor.

Eh…iPad and iPhone Versions Much Better/Easier to Play

Needs a birdseye view. Its too difficult to see at the bizzare camera angle. Also, its really hard to the see the white numbers in the 3D version versus the black numbers in the cirlces in the 2D version. iPad and iPhone versions much better, easier and more fun to play. Needs work.

Extremely limited

The game for OSX does not work well. The tutorial and basic scenarios will play through, but the custom map editor, playing against others just do not work. Avoid getting this game as without customizing the map, you are stuck with the same tile arrangement every time. The game also crashes if you leave it on someone’s turn for a while, so make sure you hit escape at least if you leave it.

Works great

I read a lot of negative reviews about this app, but it works great for me. Has not crashed once. The campaign mode has a good variation and is challenging.

Enjoy it, but needs updates.

It’s almost really good! A convenient way to enjoy a great game, when you can’t play the board game version. Unfortunately it has some issues. It has crashed several times, although it will reopen without losing much data. The biggest issue for me is while playing the scenario “Oases”, after I obtained 10 victory points (2 - cities, 4 - settlements and the longest road) the game continued for several more rounds until a computer player was declared the winner! Obviously a glitch. Also, it is diificult to see everything on the board. It takes some getting used to. Hopefully it will continue to be improved with future updates.
